National Disabled Members Conference (NDMC) |
|
National Disabled Members conference (NDMC), Brighton November 2011 by Tracey Mason This was my first time at Conference as I had agreed to stand in for my colleague who is the disability representative for our area. Subsequently, this report may not be in the usual format, but will be delivered as a ‘newbie’. As a new delegate, I attended the ‘New Delegates Session’ before anything else. This, as they say, ‘did what it says on the label’. This was run by Standing Orders and was vital in my understanding of ‘where, what and who’ for the duration of the Conference. They covered everything from housekeeping, social networking to manners and acceptable behaviour. Standing Orders explained the support provisions and equipment in place around the Conference which had been installed and provided to ensure delegates had total inclusion into the Conference. I have to say, the standard of support was the best I had ever seen at any one time. I was very impressed. |

Nationally, UNISON is Britain’s largest trade union with 1.3 million members. Most members provide public services, either directly through public sector employers such as Local Authorities and the National Health Service, or through other statutory bodies, the voluntary sector and private companies. Lincolnshire County UNISON has 7,000 members working for a number of employers, including:- - Lincolnshire County Council, which comprises about two-thirds of our membership;
- Employers who were once part of the Council, such as the Probation Service, support staff in Further Education Colleges, Connexions and Foundation (formerly Grant Maintained) schools;
- Private companies to whom the Council has privatised services e.g. HBS, Translinc and LCR Ringway;
- Voluntary and private sector employees, particularly in the field of social care.
The Branch has local representatives in many workplaces around the county and they will often be your first point of contact with the union.
